About Us

History
The Peri Urban Group of Rural Councils, Mayors and CEOs Forum was formed in 2007 in response to concerns at the lack of a comprehensive vision for the peri urban region of Melbourne and Geelong and to highlight the strengths and challenges of the region. Since 2007 the Peri Urban Group of Rural Councils has met on a regular basis and has taken a strong advocacy position, working closely with government on a range of projects and initiatives to promote and strengthen the peri urban region and the councils that manage this fast growing area of Victoria.

Who we represent
The Peri Urban Group of Rural Councils represent those council shires that are immediately adjacent to Metro Melbourne and Geelong. Geographically these council areas cover in excess of 11,000 square kilometres and represent a population of over 180,000 Victorians.

Generating more than $5.3 billion of Gross Regional Product annually, these shires are home to industries that include agriculture, dairy product manufacturing, beverage and malt manufacturing, construction, construction material mining, food processing, timber, wholesale trade and tourism. Our region provides opportunities for affordable housing and regional lifestyle living and is renowned for tourist attractions and holiday destinations.

Member councils: Bass Coast Shire Council, Baw Baw Shire Council, Golden Plains Shire Council, Moorabool Shire Council, Surf Coast Shire Council.
